Much of Cora's journey was in the south, specifically these places and each place was important to her story for their own reasons. First off, she was born in Georgia so that's already the most important and that's also where the first plantation that she had to work was at. Then each place showed racism differently, South Carolina was scientific racism/ reproduction limits, North Carolina there were lynchings, Tennessee just represented death and although Indiana was in the north it still was unsafe. More specifically Tennessee had an apocalyptic landscape places were burned down and people were dying from disease. North Carolina had Jim Crow and Klan regulations so each place had their own ways of oppression. Much of Cora's journey is constant escaping and with each stage she learns/sees more. Throughout her journey she learns what it means to be free. She realizes that in order to be free there must be unity between everyone.

Slave families' lineage is usually cut short due to selling or death. Ajarry had 5 children but only one survived and that was Mabel (Cora's Mother). Ajarry was also sold from Africa so it separated her from the rest of her family and due to illnes her family died. Mabel survived the struggles with living on the plantation and she eventually escaped and disappeared. Cora's journey was different from Ajarry's and Mabel's.
